El aerógrafo Actualizado 5/8/2012// The airbrush Updated 8/5/2012

Hi people, today I´ll talk you about my experience with a great tool, the airbrush.

The airbrush it´s a painting tool that combines a continuous air flow and paint mixing it to achieve a spray effect.
There are two basic models, in one hand the single action airbrush and in the other hand the double action airbrush.
I´ll talk you about double action airbrush because they´re the airbrushes that I have.
Well, the double action airbrushes have a mechanism that allow control air flow and at the same time the paint flow, so you can select at every time  how much paint it´s needed for your job.

An airbrush it´s made for painting over smooth surfaces, the less abrupt surface better for this tool.
So, it´s known that paint going to go as a conic spread,

So far sprays does large and faded lines and vice versa.
Is fairly easy. Ok, in modelism it's very useful for all painting levels, in low levels it's useful for primer and layer´s wear jobs. (Scratches, rust, oxides... etc).
Like this:
1)
2)
3)
4)

As you seen, it´s very important a good job of masking. Masking in airbrushing it´s essential.
In an medium or high level, art knowledges are needed, where make lightings? where make shadings? where make shadows?, textures, volume, etc need a theorical knowledge.
When you know this, you can do things like this:

Or applica to modelism:

So this tool is useful and hard to learn, and requires a maintenance hardwork.

Ok I go to update this thread with a miniature´s forum answer I gave last week, I did in spanish an I translate into english with google translator, sorry but my english isn´t better to do myself or more correct:

"The problem with this element is that for small the nozzle, 0.2 and promises to make very fine lines, and indeed, to get them we need to make a quick pass on the paint surface to achieve a quick pass and therefore need a thin line to walk a minimum distance, usually a few centimeters is usually more than enough, but if we are working mini is 2.8 cm high, make a thin line on a detail can be thing of Chinese but impossible.

Well then how do we work with the airbrush? first, to tell you that is useful in larger scale miniatures, ie, TAGs, monstrous, and scale miniatures 54mm or 1/35 onwards, at the same time in vehicles, are historical, are the 40k, whatever. This is for 2 things, firstly as large as you discussed above and other flat surfaces, the airbrush is very grateful to the rough surfaces created when light yes, but you need to spray angles correctly, on flat surfaces, this need is not dormant and can based on linear strokes generate many effects, including ilumnaciones, wear, and dust effects, in short, many things.

Both vehicles and miniatures arranged for work to airbrush masking is used, this guarantees or work must ensure that only the area we wanted, unwanted exposures protecting other areas of contrast or other colors. Obviously the more detailed and natural to have a thumbnail, the more nooks and abstract forms, the more complicated is the masking process.

Masking is normally done by 2 elements, masking tape paint life, or their versions of Model stab you with precios.com, which amounts to the same tape but molded cuts daily use by the modeler ( things like 0.5 mm) and some involve a less aggressive adhesive that does not lift the paint or should not. On the other hand are the masking liquid or jodepinceles, since for the use you have to be applied to the brush, which will become sticky and clean it carefully though possibly multiple uses destinies after this experience but not to paint more , so that I would care much use for this the Windsor and Newton both tallies put more of a painter and I'm not surprised because they are very good, I use the other hand sable generic kollinsky I go for 2 and 3 € and give me a towering performance at a price of fucking, but this is another issue.

Turning to Liquid or masking tape, run a risk of latent levantamiendo enough of the bottom layer which adheres to the mask itself, then, for painting thin layers of airbrush are high risk operations.

In modeling historical / military, often use enamel paints, set harder and harder to raise, in fact so among other things is often used very happily washes of turpentine, white spirit, and so on oils and pigments applied, if do something rough surfaces painted with acrylics're going to freak out in color when all you touch and wash with white spirit is despinte the passage of brush.

The paintings told to set better, stronger, more guarantees not to get up with the mask, albeit with a good primer, care and dedication I have masked FOW tanks with liquid and the wings of a terrorgeist tape without lifting undesirable, then it is a little skill and pinch point.

Well, I said, here's how to treat zonally, as I say, 28mm miniatures, nor enmascararamiento spreads well if you are thinking about details, it would be a thorough job to let it I discovered the mouth or eyes, the forehead, the rest of the face, and such, then rather, you can use for general lighting over the thumbnail.

The most common uses in 28mm are:

Primer Painted

Base layer

Painted light from a point (overhead, etc.)

Painting shadows very dilute application of washes to mix.

Applying weathering effects without using pigments.

That would be so broadly simple techniques for using airbrush in minis of this scale, if that you better, it's your tool, if you had in mind something else or pretend to paint you in a marine shoulder pad of the Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo, airbrush know that's not what you do.

By the way, also means that you can use templates to make logos and so on, fix them with adhesive (heat) and paint with the template, logo, or symbol you've designed, however it is also a work of Chinese design and cut so thorough and efficient logo to be marked with the airport, but hey, the possibility is there."

When I do it better, go up tricks and techniques.
I hope you liked, greetings to all.
